Templates determine how a document will look like - regardless the output format you select for exporting or regardless the document .
howt.io comes with some default templates for a quick start, but the real use comes when creating your custom templates.

Some file types have their special characteristics, like a PDF document usually consists of many pages instead of an endless page of content. Some of these specialities can be handled in the template edition as well - for each output format individually.

To adjust a template, you need to select it in the sidebar on the settings view.
Once opened, you can see different tabs at the top that lead you to the different parts of the template.

You have a preview on the side where you can see how your document would look like in real-time according to your changes. Currently, you can preview PDF and HTML which should give a good sense of the final outcome.
Hint: You can also preview a template with a document you are currently working on. For that, toggle the preview mode in the editor to "Template".
